Injection with Cortisone or Hyaluronic Acid 3 months before Total Knee Replacement Surgery Increases Risk of Deep Infection

ATTENTION those who are considering total knee replacement surgery; according to an article published in the American Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (2019), "Comparison of Infection Risk with Corticosteroid or Hyaluronic Acid Injection Prior to Total Knee Arthroplasty" found that getting an injection of either (or both) of these substances within 3 months prior to replacement surgery greatly increased the risk of deep infection around the artificial joint.

We are happy to report that in the month of August, 2024, 4 of our patients who had scheduled knee replacement surgery prior to our care chose to cancel that surgery because of their results!

If you or a friend is committed to having total knee replacement surgery, please strongly consider NOT having any knee injections within 3 months prior to that surgery as a precaution against unnecessary risk of infection.
